Designated in 2000, Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary (TBNMS), headquartered in Alpena, Michigan, is one of 14 sites managed by NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, and the only one in the Great Lakes. In 2014, the boundaries of Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary in Lake Huron were expanded from 448 square miles to 4,300 square miles. The new boundaries include the waters of Lake Huron adjacent to Michigan’s Alcona, Alpena and Presque Isle counties to the Canadian border.

In collaboration with the Center's Education and Outreach Coordinator and Facility/Exhibits Manager we developed a project management plan to produce informational signage in the new designated boundaries of the TBNMS. I helped design over 100 wayfinding signs for a five-county expansion campaign that will engage the public with historical and cultural resources. More than 1000 interpretive signs from as far south as Tawas to Hammond Bay highlight shipwrecks, lighthouses, and other significant maritime and geographical features.
